Dental Implants explained?

Dental Implants are commonly used to replace one or more missing teeth, in the same arch or both arches, whilst some patients need a full set of new teeth. They are posts that support replacement teeth. They fit directly into your jawbone and hold your new replacement teeth securely in place in the same way that roots support natural teeth.

They restore your ability to eat, smile and speak comfortably both at work and socially.  Implants look and feel like natural teeth, boosting your confidence.  A life changing treatment!

Implants also stimulate the jawbone, preventing bone loss over time and with proper care, they are long-lasting.

Each implant is placed into a socket that is carefully drilled at the precise location of the intended tooth. Often the implant can be placed at the same time as removal of the tooth all on the same day.

Implants are usually made of highly durable titanium. If you look after them properly and maintain good oral hygiene, then they should last for the rest of your life.

Your Dental Implant Journey with us

During your initial assessment and consultation with our surgeon, we discuss your needs, and we often take a 3D CBCT scan to determine the amount of bone you have, the position of the nerves and bone structure.  This is to ensure that implants are placed in the best position for safety, durability and longevity. If there isn't enough bone, bone grafting (replacement of lost bone) may be required.

Your implant placement surgery involves a titanium implant being surgically placed into the jawbone and once placed, it will need time to ‘settle' into the bone. This usually takes up to 3 months, sometimes longer.  This will be explained to you in more detail during your consultation. During this time, we recommend a temporary bridge or denture as an interim measure.
Once healed, a customised crown, bridge or denture is attached to restore your smile.

Aftercare

Post-operative care

We'll provide guidance on immediate aftercare after surgery, how to manage any discomfort and the ‘dos and don't's' following completion of your implant treatment.

Maintenance

Your implant can last a lifetime with the right care and our long-term care advice is to keep your implant clean in the same way you do with your natural teeth.  Regular check-ups ensure your implants are functioning correctly are also recommended.

Follow-up appointments

We schedule further assessments, as necessary, to monitor your recovery and implant health.
